Storage of Fireworks

Another question that I get a lot of the time while working is "What if I don't use everything? Will they go bad?" The answer is no.  If you follow a few easy guidelines for the storage of 1.4G fireworks they will last indefinitely.

1. Store in a cool dry place - You want to make sure that place that you store the fireworks does not get too hot, and always stays dry. Moisture is fireworks worst enemy, you want to keep them as dry as possible. So your garage is not the best place. Another important requirement to considered is not they will not be stored anywhere near open flames, or sparks.

2. Keep in original wrapper -  Try only to open firework packages when necessary, you want to try to keep all possible moisture away from the items.

3. Place in a cardboard box - If you purchased fireworks from a wholesaler chances are they were boxed in a cardboard box. Make sure that you keep these boxes till after the show is over. With these empty boxes throw all leftover pieces into the box and then seal when full. Make sure that the place that you chose to store your fireworks conforms to Step 1.

4. Do not handle - One of the easiest ways to destroy perfectly good fireworks is by over handling. Remember that fireworks are not toys and should not be played with like toys. You do not want to damage any part of any device or disturb the powder. Keep fireworks in the box until you are ready to display that item.

Destroying Unused/Used Fireworks

The easiest way to get rid of unused fireworks is by soaking the devices in a bucket of water. Why you would want to destroy a perfectly good item is beyond me. You would want to do this if you had an item misfire.

1. Do not attempt to relight any duds or burn any devices that you have.- Even though the device may have all been spent, there still could be residual still left in spots, that could ignite. If you have a device that stopped in the middle of it do not try to take apart and relight as the device will not be stable. Also the fuse that run between multi-shot idem are to short to safely light.

2. Used Items - Throw away all completely used casing pieces in a trash bag. Wait till the next day if at all possible to start picking up used pieces. This will make sure that there isn't any items that are still smoldering. If you had a lot of items you will need a couple of trash bags.

3. Damaged Pieces - If during storage your fireworks get wet, and you try to light them but it just burns the external fuse and goes out, do not burn. Just because the fuse was damaged does not automatically assume that it is safe to burn. There still could be fuse and powder in the device that was not damaged and will ignite.
