In the world of consumer fireworks there are now eight
different types of aerial shells that are available to the consumer. Each
of these types of shells has a spot where they perfectly fit in a show.
Every type of shell produces a unique effect when it breaks. This is just
an overview of aerial shells now available for consumer. For theory
on how to maximize the effects of each one check out our section on shell
theory in the advance section.

Type of Shell |
Picture |
Movie |
| Ball |
These shells break in a round shape. This
is the oldest style of consumer shells. It contains a maximum powder
load of 25gr.
|
 |
Movie |
| Canister |
Canister shells break in a hard bowtie
effect. The canister shells normally have a loud crack to them when
they break. These shells contain the maximum allowed powder of 50gr.

 |
|
| Mine |
Mines look like a geyser going off. The
stars are shot up into the air all ready lit.

| Double Break
(Peanut) |
Double shells a.k.a. "Peanut Shells", are
nicknamed that due to the fact that they look like a gigantic peanut.
This shell is formed by placing two ball shells on top of each other
with the timing fuse running down to the bottom shell so that when the
lift charge ignites the lower timing fuse it also lights the top
shells timing fuse. Again the total powder load for consumer mortar
shells is 50gr. even though there are two shells the total is still
50gr. Each half of the double break shell have 25gr. in it.

 |
|
| Triple Break |
The powder load in this shell is broken
up into the following amount for each break, (starting from bottom)
25gr., 15gr., and 10gr. Each break normally has a different color, and
sometimes the same visual effect. These shells a great to be part of a
finale.

|
| Quad Break |
These are a brand new type of aerial
shell for the 2003 season. These shells are perfect for a mini finale.
Quad shells come in either a 1" or a 1 - 3/4" version. If at all
possible try to purchase a kit that contains shells that are all 1 -
3/4" diameter. This way you don't have to worry about loading shells
into the wrong size pipe.

|
Movie |
| Quintuple Break |
Quintuple shells are another new type of
aerial shell available to the consumer. These shells currently only
come in a 1" diameter version as far I as have seen. These types of
shells are great for between items but not for a finale. There effects
are smaller, but more varied, however with the pipe only being 1"
diameter it would be difficult to launch a number of these shells
safely.

|
|
| Mini Shell |
Mini Shell kits are another new item that
came out this year. They contain from 6 to 12 shells and are from 1/2"
to 1" in diameter. The shells are both cylindrical and round.

 |
|
| Mine and
Shell |
This is my favorite new shell design of
2004. The shell contains both a mine and a shell effect. As
the shell launches out of the pipe it is followed by a plume of color,
they breaks into a bouquet of varied effects.
