Cake Rack Construction

Materials:
1 - 2x6 or 2x8 (Depending on Width of Items) 48" long
12 - 1/4" Bolts and Nuts
6 - 4" L brackets (Can be larger if using large cakes)

Tools:
7/8" Drill Bit
1/4" Drill Bit
Power Drill

The cake rack that we are going to build can hold up to three items. If you wish to hold more than three items on the rack adjust the length of the 2x6 or 2x8 to the desired length. Due the potential for difficulty in transporting the rack I would recommend not going more that 48".  The items that I used to build this rack was 1 fountain, and 2 different sized cakes.

Note:
When designing your cake rack it is important that you know the dimensions of the devices that could possible be used on your rack. Due to the variety of different shapes it is difficult to come up with a single spacing that will work for all items.

1. Select the size of the base and cut the base of the rack.
To properly select the correct size of the base you must know what items you want to shoot from it. If you want to shoot small to medium sized fountains and cakes then the 2x6 with work. However if you want to shoot medium to large fountains and cakes you will need to go with a 2x8. 500 Gram cakes are not designed to be fired from this rack.

2. Drill holes for rebar stabilizers.
Measure 3 inches in from each end of the size board that you choose, and try to get the hole in the middle, on a 2x6 in this example the middle would be 2.75". This will provide the best stability.

3. Arrange potential items on the rack to get an idea of L bracket placement.
Now take the items you want to shoot off of this rack and the L brackets and arrange the items evenly on the rack try to put the center of the center item in the absolute middle of the rack at the 24" line. The other items the L bracket on the outside measure 1" from the stabilizer holes that is where you should put that end of the L bracket. Place the items in between the L brackets and mark the holes.

4. Drill bolt holes.
Take the 1/4" drill bit and drill all of the holes where you marked.

5. Paint
This step is optional, if you do not want your audience to see the rack, you should paint the rack a flat black color to hide it better.
.
Operation: To safely operate this rack the L brackets won't be enough to hold the securely. The day of the firework display, take the items you wish to fire on the rack, place them in between the  L brackets and tighten the nuts down on the bolts to secure them. Place the cake or fountain in between the two L brackets before  locking the second L bracket into place. Secure the second L bracket. Now take duct tape and wrap around the item a few times to make sure that the cake or fountain won't tip. Note: Do not cover the fuse! When you are ready to set up the display take the rack and secure it by using two 12" long 3/4" rebar on each end. Now you are ready to fire your rack. If you are using electrical firing attach all the clips now.
